原文文本 - English英语 Belarus Shows Model For Protecting World’s Fragile Peat-lands
As delegates from around the world gather this week at an international biodiversity conference in Nagoya, Japan, a project supported by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Global Environment Facility (GEF) is being presented as a successful model for protection of a uniquely rich area of wildlife.
The tenth conference of parties (COP10) to the 1992 Convention on Biological Diversity, from 18 to 29 October, will focus in depth on inland, coastal, marine and mountain environments and look at the impact of climate change, and arrangements for protection and sustainable use of ecologically sensitive areas.
Among the world’s fragile sites are the more than four million square kilometers of peatland in 180 countries. A four-year UNDP-GEF –backed project completed this year has succeeded in safeguarding 28,200 hectares of Belarus’ peat swamps that cover some 6.4 percent of the country.
The 2006-2010 restoration project, focused on 17 swamp areas that had been drained between 1950 and 1990 due to large-scale extraction or agriculture works. The peat was mined due to its value as a fuel source and material for insulation.
Drainage of the sites dried the earth, making them highly vulnerable to long-burning fires that released approximately 235,000 tons of CO2 annually. Rehydration of the swamps—by filling drainage ditches and building dams to raise groundwater levels—extinguished the fires and cut public spending on firefighting by an estimated US$ 1.5 million annually.
Restoration, which cost an average of US$50 toUS$100 per hectare, also halted the CO2 emissions, and created a more fertile environment for cranberry picking, fishing, hunting and tourism, and for flora and fauna, including endangered birds such as the Curlew and the Greater spotted Eagle.
“We hope that parties at this conference will prioritize the protection, restoration and wise use of the world’s peat-lands as essential and cost-effective measures for biodiversity conservation and ecosystem based mitigation and adaptation,” said Nik Sekhran, UNDP’s principal technical adviser on biodiversity.
The Belarus project led to the Government’s adoption of a policy on peat-land areas where mining activity has taken place. According to the policy, disturbed areas are to be restored at the end of their “economic life”. They had previously been turned into reservoirs or forestland.
The project team is currently sharing its experiences with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and supporting negotiations to include peat-lands in future carbon trading mechanisms under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
Peat-lands store about one-third of global soil carbon and are one of the planet’s major carbon pools.

One of the critic’s tasks is to challenge definitions of literature and criticism that seem too general, too narrow, or unworkable for any other reason. Whatever it is, literary criticism deals with different dimensions of literature as a collection of texts through which authors evoke more or less fictitious worlds for the imagination of readers.
We can look at any work of literature by paying special attention to one of several aspects: its language and structure; its intended purpose; the information and worldview it conveys; or its effect on an audience. Most good critics steer clear of exclusive interest in a single element. In studying a text’s formal characteristics, for example, critics usually recognize the variability of performances of dramatic works and the variability of readers’ mental interpretations of texts. Because works of literature can be studied long after their first publication, awareness of historical and theoretical context contributes to our understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of them. Historical research relates a work to the life and times of its author. Until the invention of audio recording, speech was limited to those within earshot or on the other end of a telephone, and it faded away immediately, except in the memories of speaker and hearer. Writing overcomes this limitation and allows not only the storage of immense amounts of information but its transmission to wherever a written message may be conveyed.
Writing is, therefore, a powerful instrument for transmitting culture from generation to generation. It plays a crucial role in the development and continuation of complex civilizations, with their elaborate technologies and economies, bodies of literature, codes of law, and other specializations, each with its own body of knowledge to be preserved and transmitted. Some civilizations, such as that of ancient India and of Viking Scandinavia, preserved amazing quantities of verbal material with remarkably little change over long periods of time through sheer painstaking memorization. But such a process has severe limitations, and the expenditure of human energy is immense.

Intelligent design described herewith points to the fact that the laws of nature created by God do not function by themselves, because they are dependent upon God’s knowledge and God’s intention.
The evolution of successive “versions” of species is a description of the fact that God invents a new and creative design for his creatures in each environment.
Instead of simply being in awe at God’s creativity in designing and creating millions of living creatures and plants, the theory of evolution explains that God continuously shows His creativity by designing and crafting different “versions” of each such species.
Aging From the Islamic Perspective
In advanced age, God lets a tire of life and a yearning for quiet grow within man. This spiritual state helps those who have the Ieman to part and “move” to Janna. In this chapter of life, God allows man to feel the transient nature of this carnal life, and enhances the pursuit of eternal joy in the Afterlife.
This spiritual state “translates” the Divine Book of this Life for man. This book, with its letters and words, points to the characteristics of its Creator and “tells” man:
Someone who only sees this life and believes that it does not continue afterwards is overwhelmed by loss in times of grief or pain, catastrophes or long illnesses.

You have returned to your home country under the assistance of IOM London Voluntary Assisted Return and Reintegration Programme (VARRP). The UK IOM Reintegration Fund aims to assist you with your individual reintegration needs as well as those of each member of your family returning with you. Your needs have been discussed with IOM UK staff and recorded in your individualised return plan (IRP) which has been sent to the IOM mission in your country in order to make them aware of your individual return and reintegration needs.
As you are aware the IOM Reintegration Fund may take different forms and your financial assistance can be invested in the following ways:

The reintegration payment for opening businesses has a total value of £2000 and will be provided in two separate payments: an initial payment of £1500 and a second payment of £500 six months after return, if the business is still operational.

Sixty-two-year-old Abdul Kareem put his protective arm around a rocky hillside and nurtured it till it bloomed. This tall, lanky college dropout has single-handedly generated forests on an area covering 32 acres between Kasargod and Payyannur.
As a youngster, Kareem worked in Mumbai as a labourer in the dockyards, and in the Gulf he was with a travel and placement agency. Having done well for himself, he returned home to Nileshwar, his village in Kerala, and got married. During trips to his in-law’s home in Puliyamkulam, about 20km from Nileshwar, he was disturbed at the sight of a totally denuded hill. Reminded of the stories of his ancestors’ sacred groves, he yearned for one of his own. Inspired by the Arabs’ success story of greening deserts, he decided to forest the barren hill and make it his very own kaavu or sacred grove.

原文文本 - English英语 The history of Sri Lanka begins around 30,000 years ago when the island was first inhabited.
Chronicles, including the Mahavamsa, the Dipavamsa, the Culavamsa and the Rajavaliya record events from the beginning of the Sinhalese monarchy in the 6th century BC through the arrival of European Colonialists in the 16th century and to the disestablishment of the monarchy in 1815.
Some mentions of the country are found in the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the books of Gautama Buddha’s teachings.
Buddhism was introduced in the 3rd century BC by Arahath Mahinda (son of the Indian emperor Ashoka the Great).
From the 16th century, some coastal areas of the country were ruled by the Portuguese, the Dutch and the British.
Sri Lanka was ruled by 181 kings from the Anuradhapura to Kandy periods.
After 1815, the entire nation was under British colonial rule and armed uprisings against the British took place in the 1818 Uva Rebellion and the 1848 Matale Rebellion.
Independence was finally granted in 1948 but the country remained a Dominion of the British Empire.
Portuguese era
The first Europeans to visit Sri Lanka in modern times were the Portuguese; Lourenco de Almeida arrived in 1505 and found that the island, divided into seven warring kingdoms, was unable to fend off intruders.
The Portuguese founded a fort at the port city of Colombo in 1517 and gradually extended their control over the coastal areas.
In 1592, the Sinhalese moved their capital to the inland city of Kandy, a location more secure against attack from invaders.
Intermittent warfare continued through the 16th century.
Many lowland Sinhalese were forced to convert to Christianity while the coastal Moors were religiously persecuted and forced to retreat to the Central highlands.
The Buddhist majority disliked the Portuguese occupation and its influences, welcoming any power who might rescue them.
When the Dutch captain Joris van Spilbergen landed in 1602, the king of Kandy appealed to him for help.
Dutch era
Rajasinghe II, the king of Kandy, made a treaty with the Dutch in 1638 to get rid of the Portuguese who ruled most of the coastal area of the island.
The main conditions of the treaty were that the Dutch should handover the coastal areas they capture to the Kandyan king and the king should grant the Dutch a monopoly over trade on the entire island.
The agreement was breached by both parties.
By 1660, the Dutch controlled the whole island except the Kingdom of Kandy and it was not until 1656 that Colombo fell.
The Dutch (Protestants) persecuted the Catholics and the remaining Portuguese settlers, left the Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims alone.
The Dutch taxed the people far more heavily than the Portuguese had done.
In 1659, the British sea captain Robert Knox landed by chance on Sri Lanka and was captured by the king of Kandy, along with sixteen sailors.
He and another sailor escaped 19 years later and wrote an account of his stay.
This helped to bring the island to the attention of the British.
A legacy of the Dutch period in Ceylon is the Dutch Burghers, a people of mixed Dutch and local origin.
A later definition of the Burgher people of Ceylon was handed down in 1883 by the Chief Justice of Ceylon, Sir Richard Ottley.

原文文本 - English英语 Titan is the only moon in the solar system with a thick atmosphere, and the only world besides the Earth known to have lakes and seas on its surface.
However, with a frigid surface temperature of around minus 290 degrees Fahrenheit (94 kelvins), the rain that falls from Titan’s skies is not water but instead liquid methane and ethane, compounds that are normally gasses on Earth.
Neish and her team made the discovery by comparing craters on Titan to craters on Jupiter’s moon Ganymede.
Ganymede is a giant moon with a water ice crust, similar to Titan, so craters on the two moons should have similar shapes.
However, Ganymede has almost no atmosphere and thus no wind or rain to erode its surface.
“We found that craters on Titan were on average hundreds of yards (meters) shallower than similarly sized craters on Ganymede, suggesting that some process on Titan is filling its craters,” says Neish, who is lead author of a paper about this research published online in the journal Icarus Dec 3, 2012.
The team used the average depth-versus-diameter trend for craters on Ganymede derived from stereo images from NASA’s Galileo spacecraft.
The same trend for craters on Titan was calculated using estimates of the crater depth from data derived from images made by Cassini’s radar instrument.
Titan’s atmosphere is mostly nitrogen with a trace of methane and other more complex molecules made of hydrogen and carbon (hydrocarbons).
The source of Titan’s methane remains a mystery because methane in the atmosphere is broken down over relatively short timescales by sunlight.
Fragments of methane molecules then recombine into more complex hydrocarbons in the upper atmosphere, forming thick, orange smog that hides the surface from view.
Some of the larger particles eventually rain out on to the surface, where they appear to get bound together to form the sand.
“Since the sand appears to be produced from the atmospheric methane, Titan must have had methane in its atmosphere for at least several hundred million years in order to fill craters to the levels we are seeing,” says Neish.
However, researchers estimate Titan’s current supply of methane should be broken down by sunlight within tens of millions of years , so Titan either had a lot more methane in the past, or it is being replenished somehow.
Team members say it’s possible that other processes could be filling the craters on Titan: erosion from the flow of liquid methane and ethane for example.
However, this type of weathering tends to fill a crater quickly at first, then more slowly as the crater rim gets worn down and less steep.
If liquid erosion were primarily responsible for infill, then the team would expect to see a lot of partially filled craters on Titan.
“However, this is not the case,” says Neish. “Instead we see craters at all stages; some just beginning to windblown sand, which fills craters and other features at a steady rate.”
All solid materials under stress flow very slowly over time.
This is called viscous flow, and it is like what to fill the hole and flatten the surface.
Craters on icy satellites tend to get shallower over time as the ice flows viscously, so it’s possible that some of the shallow craters on Titan are simply much older or experienced a higher heat flow than the similarly sized, fresh craters on Ganymede studied in this work.
However Titan’s crust is mostly water ice, and at the extremely low temperatures on Titan, ice shouldn’t flow enough to account for such a large difference in depth compared to the Ganymede craters, according to the team.
Also, just like stream erosion, deformation from viscous flow tends to happen rapidly at first, then more slowly as the material adjusts, so one would expect to see a lot of partially filled craters on Titan if its surface was deforming easily through viscous flow.

Dry sowing of paddy in aswedumised fields is known as kekulama in Sri Lanka.
When dry sowing is done in highland under shifting cultivation, it is called vee hena.
In the past, for kekulama, the fields were ploughed with a new country plough first to get a somewhat deeper tillage, then kept for a few days and dry seeds were sown with the anticipation of rains soon.
Having sown seeds again, farmers ploughed the land with an old worn out plough to cover the seeds.
When the fields are wet, the same operations are done but sprouted seeds are sown instead.
In some paddy tracts under some tanks, certain sections were sown to kekulama and then when the tanks were full with rains, other sections were sown having done the normal wetland land preparation , which includes:
1. First ploughing
2. Cleaning bunds
3. Re-plastering bunds
4. Second ploughing
5. Puddling
6. Levelling
7. Preparing a shallow channel system to drain the fields
8. Sowing sprouted seeds
This combination of above cultural practices apparently has being adopted for centuries with the aim of controlling weeds.
Weed menace is unavoidable because of depletion of soil fertility mainly caused by soil erosion inherent to paddy wetland cultivation.
In depleted soil, weeds grow much more vigorously than paddy because the fertility level and other physical conditions are idea for weeds.
If and when other means of weeds are available, most of the said practices can be got rid of.
One of the main attempts of nava kekelama is to manage weeds with other innovations not requiring more water than for an ordinary highland crop.
Water economy
Though the precipitation, intensity of rainfall and spread over months vary annually, in the long run annual average rainfall remains constant.
Because of this factor, maximum amount of water available for storage with reservoirs and tanks in Sri Lanka has a limit.
There is no purpose of going beyond this storage limit as there would not be water to fill any more tanks and reservoirs.
A good example is the reservoir at Lunugamvehera which hardly fills in any year with the average annual rainfall.
Then further expansion of farming or extent of farming land depends on economizing water or improving water (or irrigation) efficiency.
The simplest and most efficient ways of economizing water are offered by the kekulam method of paddy cultivation.
They are as follows:
1. Land preparation is done either wet condition or dry condition. The fields are not inundated when kekulam method is adopted as the weeds are managed by other cultural practices like mulching.
2. Mulching the crop lowers the evaporation from surface thus increasing the irrigation interval.
3. It has been observed that crops cultivated to kekulam method reach maturity twelve days earlier than conventionally grown crops. Reasons for this phenomenon is not clear but it can be due to non-use of weedicides which retards the growth rate.
4. Sowing pre-germinated and dried seeds can shorten the maturity by another four days. Reaching maturity early is very critical because of water shortages occurring often at the end of the season. 04 and 05 together is a guarantee against crop failure due to water shortage at the end of the season.
5. Kekulam method improves the organic matter content of the soil over time. As organic matter imbibes large quantities of water, the crop can withstand a reasonably long dry period on one hand and increase the irrigation interval on the other.
Practical experience shows that nava kekulam method saves forty to sixty percent of water needed during the two seasons of a year.
This indicates that the acreage under paddy cultivation in Sri Lanka can be doubled when nava kekeulam method is adopted.
Instead of constructing new dams and tanks to increase the extent of land under paddy, popularizing nava kekulam method among farmers will be much more cost effective and also ecologically favourable.

Diabetes can be mainly classified into two types: type 1 and type 2.
The former is also called juvenile diabetes as it is commonly seen in young children, teenagers and adults usually under the ages of 25-30.
This occurs when the pancreas are unable to produce insulin, which is responsible to carry glucose to our cells.
When enough insulin is not produced, the glucose level in the blood increases.
This increase leads to diabetes.
On the other hand, type 2 diabetes is said to occur in middle-aged and older people who suffer from problems of obesity.
This type of diabetes usually occurs due to a sedentary lifestyle and poor eating habits.
In this case, the pancreas do produce insulin but the body becomes resistant to insulin.
It is not able to use the insulin properly, leading to the presence of glucose in the blood.
Apart from these two, gestational diabetes is the third type of diabetes that occurs in women.
Gestational diabetes, as the name suggests occurs when a woman is pregnant and is a result of hormonal changes.
Though gestational diabetes does not stay after the baby is born, women who have gestational diabetes during the pregnancy are at a higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes later in their life.
Causes of Diabetes in Women
Type 1 diabetes is usually seen in people who have a family history of this disease.
Moreover, people who are suffering from an abnormal immune response are also said to have this form of diabetes.
Even in the case of type 2 diabetes, usually genetics do play a role.
Other than this, it is also very common in people who are obese, who follow an unhealthy diet, and an unhealthy lifestyle.
The chances of diabetes are higher in women of certain races such as African-American, American Indian, Hispanic etc.
Women who suffer from the problem of ovarian cysts or have infertility problems are also at a higher risk of having diabetes later in their lives.
Symptoms of diabetes in Women
Though signs of diabetes in women, and in men are mostly the same, there are a few which occur only in women.
Let us take a look at some of the signs and symptoms of diabetes in women.
Unexplained weight loss is one of the common sign of type 1 diabetes in women.
Our body is unable to use all the calories provided by food we eat, even after following a healthy diet.
Get yourself checked if you are losing quite some weight even after eating properly and not much exercise.
Another symptom that is seen in both types of diabetes is the need to visit the washroom frequently.
The human body tries to get rid of excess sugar through urine and hence, one feels the need to urinate often.
This happens within very short periods of time, and is medically called polyuria.
As excessing urination not only eliminates the extra sugar present in the body, but also large amounts of water, the individual may suffer from the problem of dehydration.
Due to this, she may also experience excessive thirst (medically known as polydipsia) throughout the day which is another symptom of diabetes in women.
One of the typical signs of type 2 diabetes in women is excessive eating, medically known as polyphagia.
When a person has this type of diabetes, the level of insulin is very high in the body.
As insulin aids in stimulating hunger, too much of it may make the person feel unnecessarily hungry, and eventually eat more than required.
Another symptom of diabetes in women is the occurrence of skin infections as well as a vaginal yeast infection, as diabetes is a condition that helps yeast grow easily.
Diabetic women may also experience urinary tract infections very frequently.
Sexual dysfunction is also observed as a common symptom of diabetes in women.
It is said that diabetic women may experience pain or discomfort while indulging in sexual intercourse, reduced vaginal sensitivity and vaginal lubrication, as well as an inability to achieve orgasm.
Apart from these physical symptoms, some psychological symptoms may also be seen in women affected by diabetes.

These units are responsible for filtering our blood, and eventually removing wastes from our body.
When a person is affected with diabetes, his nephrons become thicker, and are scarred in time.
They then start to leak, due to which protein is passed in our urine.
The kidney is thus damaged over a period of time.
Symptoms may include nausea, swelling of legs and headaches.
It is also said that diabetes people may suffer from depression.
Though there hasn’t been strong evidence to support this claim, it would suffice to say that people with diabetes are at a higher risk of depression.
If you experience pangs of guilt and nervousness, or change in sleep patterns, loss in appetite, visit your doctor just to be sure you aren’t suffering from diabetes.
This isn’t a sure symptom of the diseases, but why take chances.
These were some of the signs of diabetes in women.
Though most women experience these symptoms, in many cases, people suffering from type 2 diabetes do not experience any symptoms for several years.
Usually, type 2 diabetes is diagnosed after serious health problems like heart attacks, or vision problems arise.
Hence, it is important for every woman to get herself checked for diabetes regularly after the age of 40.
